It’s just about 7 hours before my competition and figured I’d pen some thoughts down while I was relaxing here.
Am I excited? The answer may come as a surprise, but no. This isn’t because I don’t care about the meet or the competition, but through the years of competing at this most competitive level, I have learnt to be more composed and more objective.
I have learnt to keep the adrenaline as low as possible because too much anticipation can create too much stress and pressure to perform. I can still recall the first time I competed at the Asian championships way back in 2016. The excitement was indescribable and because I was new, I had no idea what was going to happen. I also didn’t do any homework on who my competitors were. This was a good thing for me, because all I needed to focus on was to out-perform myself at that time.
This round is going to be my 4th Worlds competition to date. Not only do I hold more responsibility this time round, as the team leader for the Team Singapore contingent, but I feel a higher sense of eagerness helping coach them through their competitions. For many of them, this is the first time they are competing at a world level, and it really helps to have some guidance.
I also managed to link up with some of my athletes from other countries, especially my friends from Thailand. It was really good connecting with everyone throughout the competition period. Even before the competition today, I already feel accomplished. I feel I’ve made a positive impact on the lifting community, particularly the asian community, providing the support to the younger and newer lifters so they can shine!
All this being said, I have been exhausting all my energy and thoughts on them this past week, with the platform coaching and handling. Now, it’s time to direct all that attention back on myself, as I have one more mission to complete.
I will shine and make Singapore proud!
If you want to catch me in action, I will be competing today, 13th June, 3pm SGT. The link to watch the event is: https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/live/event/2019-powerlifting-world-classic-championships-helsingborg/video/detail/m-74kg-w-72kg-m-83kg-world-classic-championships-helsingborg/
